In the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 Finale, there was a pivotal flashback scene in which Alison (Sasha Pieterse), wearing her Vivian Darkbloom brunette wig, is staring out the window of an empty shop. Mona (Janel Parrish) walks in, in full nerdy Mona mode, and asks her what she’s doing. Ali fills her in on a “secret,” that she’s watching someone. But who? >>>

Pretty Little Liars: Q&A with “A” |

In one of the most buzzed about finales this season, the villain of Pretty Little Liars – “A” – was revealed. Turns out, “A” was Hanna’s friend, Mona, all along. I got a chance to chat with Mona herself, Janel Parrish, in a conference call. Now that she’s been made a series regular, we know the finale wasn’t the end of Mona or “A,” and she gave us the scoop on her role as “A” and the upcoming third season, which starts in June.
Having read the books, Janel had a thought that perhaps she was “A,” but she only found out for certain the week before the finale started filming. Though, in the episodes prior to the finale, she caught a few hints. “I started to suspect that it was me once [Mona] started getting texts from ‘A,’” she said. “I was trying not to get my hopes up too high.” But after filming the finale, she had a big secret to keep until it aired. “It was so hard! I had such an amazing time filming the finale, and I just wanted to be able to tell everybody about it.”
And while a few of our biggest questions were answered in the finale, several others were let wide open. Janel couldn’t tell us much, but she did give us a few hints. The premiere of season three, she said, will take place six months after Maya’s body was found, and Mona is still in the Radley Sanitarium. As for whether or not Mona had anything to do with Maya’s death, Janel wasn’t sure, but she did say, “Nothing is unconnected in Rosewood. It’s a creepy little town.”
“Season three’s going to get start to get crazy,” Janel said. “I think there’s a lot more going on that hasn’t been told yet.” And while Janel admitted to knowing very little about the upcoming season, she did have a guess about Mona and Hanna’s relationship from here on out. “It’s safe to say their friendship is ruined.”
After the finale, we know that Mona is “A,” but there are definitely others involved. That makes sense because, as Janel pointed out, there are a few things Mona couldn’t have done. For example, that creepy massage Emily got in an earlier episode in season two definitely wasn’t Mona – she was with Hanna riding horses at the time. Though she has faith these questions will be answered. “The writers do everything for a reason. […] Nothing is an accident.”
But we’ll have to wait a few months to get all the details. Pretty Little Liars has its third season premiere on June 5th, and after talking with Janel, I have a feeling the new season is going to be pretty exciting. And Mona definitely isn’t going away any time soon.

Lucy Hale and Sasha Pieterse share a hug on set of Pretty Little Liars in this new shot from director Norman Buckley.
JJJ recently caught up with Lucy, 22, to chat about the next season, the reveal of “A” and more.
On the “A” Team: “We honestly didn’t know who ‘A’ was going to be until the week we started shooting the last episode. We didn’t know if they were going to go off the books or do something new…so this ‘A’ team, it could very possibly be new characters they bring in for the new season. Or it could be people that are already there and I think that’s so exciting, because anything goes…”
On what will happen with Ezra and Aria: “They are out in the public for the very first time and it’s in the right direction. I know that Ian’s going to be a big part of season three so I assume he’ll be with Aria…but as you know, they will cross some bumps along the way. I personally want to see Ezra’s family. We haven’t seen that in the show yet so maybe we’ll get into that.”
On Lady Antebellum’s “Just A Kiss” as Ezra and Aria’s theme: “When we were filming that scene [in the last episode], I heard the song playing in the background but I didn’t think we would actually get clearance to use it (laughs). It’s the perfect song. They are my favorite band and I wrote about it on Twitter and they wrote me back! They said that is was great to be a part of the show and they really like it. It was really sweet. I could not think of a more perfect song.”
